After our approximately one-hour journey from Izmir, we reach Bergama, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
We start our trip with Asklepion, one of the oldest known healing centers of ancient times, where the first foundations of the science of pharmacy were laid and dedicated to Asklepios, the god of healing. During our visit accompanied by our guide, we will have detailed information about the treatment methods and recovery cures applied to the patients here.
After completing our tour of Asklepion, we go to the Acropolis, which means “upper city”, to visit the Ancient City of Pergamon, after having free time for lunch. During our short journey, we see the Ottoman period structures Hoca Sinan Mosque and Hacı Hekim Bath, located on the foothills of the Acropolis, the oldest residential area of Bergama.
Then, we reach the cable car station that will take us to the Acropolis, with a panoramic view of Kızılavlu, which is one of the “Seven Churches” considered sacred to Christianity and takes its name from the color of the building stone used in its construction.
After a short cable car ride, you will see Hellenistic ruins such as palaces and water cisterns from the pre-Roman period, as well as the Temple of Trajan, placed like a crown on top of the city, the second largest library in the world after Alexandria, where parchment paper was first used, and the oldest library in the ancient world.
We visit the Pergamon Theater, one of the vertical theatres, and listen to the sad story of the Zeus Altar from our guide, where it is located, one of the most famous works of sculpture of the Hellenistic age, the original of which is exhibited in the Berlin Pergamon Museum today.
